Plot

After van's exploits in elestria, Van and courtney are thrilled to join zelda and link on an expedition below hyrule castle, but they all got more than they bargained for when the demon king ganondorf awakened, stripped link of his power, broke the master sword, stole van's R factor leaving him unable to transform, and separated our heroes. Van and courtney wake up within rito village amidst a wild blizzard, meeting the young rito warrior; tulin, who needs help proving to his father he doesn’t need to treat him like a hatchling. How will our heroes fare in hyrule now that the demon king has reawakened?

Tulin of rito village

• (flying above the village a young rito with white feathers was taken by surprise seeing two figures laying in the snow, flying down to take a closer look he was shocked seeing a human and a golden retriever puppy. having heard stories from Revali, he knew exactly who the two were and without another thought he takes them back to the village)
• Van: (groggily opens his eyes to see that he and Courtney are in a loft of some sorts, clearly not hyrule castle anymore) Courtney? Courtney, wake up! (he shakes her trying to coax the puppy awake)
• Courtney: *groans and wakes up in a dizzy manner* Alright, Yang… I’m up… I’m up…
• Van: wha- no no courtney its me van! we're in hyrule not remnant. Something happened...something bad! that mummy...It did something to link...and to me! (he tries to transform using ANY of his drivers but to no avail. He tries to summon his keyblade but can’t, and tries to planeswalk but can’t even feel his spark) all my powers...are gone!
• Courtney: What?!
• Van: (starting to panic) o-okay van, stay calm...you're just stranded in hyrule without ANY of your powers and a terrifying evil mummy destroyed the master sword and separated all of us...n-no big deal you've lost your powers before its-(feels the gloom substance from the mummy emanating from within. van then starts pacing back and forth nervously) It’s fine everything is under control! so what if you're just a normal human now van, you can still fight and you’re certainly not spiraling into a stress induced panic everything is fine, it’s fine! Courtney, tell me it’s fine!
• Courtney: *shakes Van* Settle down, Van!
• Van: (is shaken violently) thanks...I needed that. wait...there might be one power I have that’s still in tact! (he closes his eyes and focuses, and from the stone rune medallion van wears, pops out a small spirit creature that looks like an atlas beetle with a stone on its back) yes! I still have the magic I learned in elestria! now...if only I knew how to use it properly. I wasn't able to form any contracts with any elestrals and I still dont know how to cast runes...
• Courtney: Hmmm… Maybe, I could amplify them. My semblance can copy Jaune's semblance. Why don’t we give that try?
• van: I'm not sure. its not so much a matter of my magic being weak, its more so my magic kinda being...unresponsive. Ive tried to cast runes with the help of my spirit friend here, but nothing happens.
• Courtney: Let's try it. What do we have to lose?
• Van: later on, Right now Lets figure out where we are
• (as if on cue the young rito who found them came into the room)
• Tulin: You're awake! Thank goodness
• Van: huh? a rito? hey wait you’re kinda familiar to me...
• Tulin: Don’t you remember me? Master Revali saved me when I was little
• Van: master rev-wait...tulin?! is that you? by the matrix you've really grown! (he says going over and hugging the rito happy to see another friendly face after literally losing all of his powers barring his elestrals magic)
• Courtney: It has been a long time since we last saw you. It’s really good to see you.
• Tulin: yeah it sure has been! although I wasn't expecting to find you two passed out in the hebra mountains in the snow! what happened? (looks to van) and where are your fancy super belts?
• Van: my drivers you mean...? gone....stolen. lets fill you in (We recount how beneath hyrule castle we encountered this strange mummy, that appeared to be the source of the gloom, and after being infected by it, van can no longer access any of his powers except for his elestrals magic, and on top of that zelda and link had gone missing)
• Tulin: That's terrible! but at least you aren't totally defenseless? I mean you have this little beetle guy to help you with "ruin" magic
• Earth spirit: one im a teratlas not a common beetle, two its rune spells not ruin magic and three I have a name, my name is onyx
• Tulin: oh...uh sorry onyx. but again your not totally defenseless
• Van: might as well be...I can't wrap my head around this kind of magic! No matter what I try I just can't feel the connection to the magic...
• Courtney: So, I suggested that I could use my semblance; Copycat to copy Jaune's semblance to enhance his powers.
• Van: and I'm gonna try that but I also wanna be able to cast spells on my own. Courtney can't be with me all the time, what if we're separated and she can't use her copycat semblance on me? I need to learn how to use my magic on my own.
• Tulin: I get that, trust me, I REALLY do. The adults here keep insisting that I can't do everything on my own, but how am I gonna be able to stand on my own if they don't let me try? (he crosses his wings and grumbles) I'm fully fledged and they know it...
• Courtney: I understand you have something to prove, believe me but you two can't do this on your own.
• Van: for me it’s not about proving something, its about not being a burden! i-I’m still a hero... I'm not a burden! (van runs off out to the mountains to train) I am still strong, I'll master this magic in no time!
• Tulin: Stay here, Courts. I'll go after him.
• Courtney: Okay, be careful! I’m gonna try and find a way to get us back. *looks through her spell books*
• Tulin: *flies after Van*

Powerless

• (van was out in the herba mountains spellbook in hand trying to sneak up on a bunch of moblins. flipping through his spellbook he stops on rock rain spell)
• Van: hmph lets see how they handle a little avalanch...earthquake! (his magic begins to form and grow only for it to end up fizzling out, the light from the failed spell gives away van and onyx's positions. the moblins charge at van only for tulin to snipe them with his arrows)
• Van: (gasps but sighs in relief) thanks tulin, if it wasn't for you we would have been moblin chow
• Onyx: yes! thank you young avian.
• Tulin: You can always count on me, Van! and you too Onyx
• Van: I know...I just wish I could count on myself...(I sit down in the snow) I've had my powers taken away before...but only my rider powers. I still had my keyblade and my planeswalker magic to fall back on...now I don't even have that, and what I do have, my elestrals magic, I can't even use right! I feel so useless...so powerless
• Tulin: I know you can do this! Your friends believe in you and so do I.
• Van: easy for you to say...you actually have skill! you are practically a master at archery at such a young age! and that thing you did with the wind just now to fly faster to save me? you’re a born prodigy! meanwhile, I'm just...a human. who can’t even do magic right
• Tulin: van, you’re being silly! I might be good but I'm not a prodigy! It took me years to actually perfect my archery and my gust ability!
• Van: but I don't have years! what ever happened in hyrule castle is affecting the whole place! Courtney and I can't just leave like its not our problem now! and even without all my powers I wanna help, but I feel like I'd just get in the way...
• Tulin: Van, look at me, right now your frustrated, and I get it, I would be to if I were in your situation, but your not useless and your not gonna get in the way. so your new magic is finnicky! I don't care! in fact, I'm gonna help ya! I don't know much about what kind of magic you're using, but still I'm gonna help you learn how to use it!
• Van: wait seriously?
• Tulin: (nods giving van a beaky smile and a big hug to try and warm him up)
• van: (hugs the rito back, Snuggling into his warm feathers, a nice break from the cold)
• Tulin: alright so tell me how this magic works!
• Van: alright. well...from what ive learned from Onyx, the world of elestria was one created by a massive godly being who went on to create elemental titans with the help of the spirits. the titans would then create the gods who would betray the titans because the titans became evil...but thats not important. what is important is that the gods ended up granting the mortals the powers of the elemental spirits after the original spirits power was shattered into thousands of tinier spirits. there are 8 elements: wind, water, earth, fire, thunder, ice, solar and lunar.
• Tulin: I see, so what's your preference?
• Van: earth and lunar, but mainly earth
• Tulin: ooooooh, that explains why your primary spirit is a teratlas!
• Onyx: Indeed, I am in fact an earth spirit.
• Van: right. however! the best way to cast magic using this method is through the help of your spirit.
• Tulin: how so?
• Van: yeah! think of it like this! (I point to his bow) its easier to shoot arrows from your bow than to just throw the arrows at your enemies right?
• Tulin: yeah, that's a no brainer.
• Van: well it's like that with elestrals magic to. when channeled with the help of your spirit partner, magic is much more powerful and much more efficent! thats why casters always have spirits by their side, and not only do they help with casting spells, known as runes, they also help with empowering your elestrals!
• Tulin: oh! I get it! so you can use the magic but its wearker without your spirits help!
• Van: exactly!
• Tulin: but if you have a spirit then what's the problem with your magic
• Van: well... I'm having trouble connecting with it. I try and try to focus on my bond with onyx and try to cast something but...I just dont feel the magic at all.
• Tulin: I see. so you’re having trouble connecting with the magic within yourself...(pause a moment to think) I think I have an idea! follow me!

The magic connection

• (the duo arrive at a sturdinia hot spring)
• Tulin: Ta-da! welcome to the sturdinia secret hot spring! my favorite hot spring in the mountains!
• Van: ooookay? any particular reason you brought me here?
• Tulin: to teach you something master revali taught me, while I was still learning my gust technique! I think it might help you to!
• (tulin sits down by the edge of the hot spring, taking in the steam emanating off the water, even putting his feet into the water, and patting the ground next to him)
• Tulin: come on! sit next to me!
• (van shrugs and follows the rito's instructions taking off his shoes and putting my feet in the water)
• Tulin: now close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, feels the water as it flows past you.
• Van: (following tulin's guidance van does so)
• Tulin: master revali taught me this trick. he said that you can't truly control the winds, but you can understand it, feel it and become one with it (he puts his right wing in the water and lets it flow around it) no matter what, we can't outright change the flow's direction ourselves. but if we follow it's flow we can use it to our advantage! (he takes his wing out of the water, flies up and following the wind, blows a super powerful gust with his wings) and when there is a lull in motion, then that power is yours to direct! (he demonstrates by blowing gusts in several directions)
• Van: (was in awe at how much the young rito was teaching him) wow.
• Tulin: (lands) just like that! from what you described, it sounds like your magic works the same way!
• Van: so...what are you saying?
• Tulin: open yourself to the connection, feel the flow of the magic and work with it, not against it. work in fluid motions, be it's guide and not its master.
• van: be it's guide...not it's master
• Tulin: exactly! you do that and you'll be casting spells, and summoning your elestrals in no time! just relax and feel the element around you, then let it flow, trust the flow and be its guide, not its master.

The power of Earth!

• (as van considers tulin's words, the two are surprised by a group of lizalfoes)
• Van: uh-oh. looks like this private hot spring isn't so private anymore. (he and onyx get into a fighting stance) looks like we gotta fight these guys!
• Tulin: I've got your back, Van!
• Onyx: as do I master!
• (two of the lizalfoes charge, but are quickly dispatched by tulin's sharp shooting with his bow)
• Van: woah nice shot! (suddenly van is blindsided by a lizalfoe's tongue, knocking him to the ground) agh!
• Tulin: van! (tulin is then surrounded by lizalfoes himself)
• Van: (sees the lizafoes coming towards him and nods to onyx, gripping his earth rune necklacel. van takes a deep breath) be it's guide...not its master (van closes his eyes and continues his deep breaths, allowing himself to feel the earth around him, and letting magic to flow into him, through his arms, his hands and eventually his finger tips. van glowed with a caramel brown aura and opens his eyes) Earthquake! (van called out the rune and directs the magic into the ground causing the earth to shake and a small fissure to open up and swallow one of the lizalfoes) haha! it worked! (van gets up and the other lizalfoes eye him looking down into the fissure for their commander) anyone else want a piece!?
• (the lizalfoes seeing van glowing with the caramel brown aura, collect their fallen commander and run off. Van's glow subsides and he takes a breath)
• Van: I-it worked! it actually worked!
• Tulin: Way to go!
• Onyx: good show! your finally getting the hang of it
• Van: It’s all thanks to you tulin! and you two onyx!
• Tulin: hehe you were the one who cast the spells! we just helped guide you in the right direction!
• (van hugs tulin close before the two blush and seperate both chuckling softly)
• Tulin: (looks to the sky) hmmm the blizzard is getting worse, we should head back to the village.
• (onyx returns to within the pendant and van and tulin head back to the village. with the bridge out tulin carries van over the gap and back to the village)
• (when they got back up there teba was waiting)
• Teba: tulin! there you are! what were you doing this whole time?
• Van: teba sir, my apologies...I ran off and tulin went after me...but if it wasn't for him, I wouldn’t have learned how to use my magic. even still its my fault for running off.
• Teba: hmmmm...thats quite alright. you and tulin seem to have developed some kind of bond. I can tell this excursion of yours has helped you both grow closer.
• (tulin and van both look at each other with a smile)
• Teba: never the less, tulin, it's almost time for the scouting trip. van, courtney is waiting in our home, you'd two best to go and see her.
• Van: right. I'll meet up with you before ya leave tulin, to wish ya luck! (he says heading back up to see courtney) courtney!
• Courtney: Van?
• Van: listen...I'm sorry for running off like that. this whole thing...just became too much for me...but thanks to tulin, I can use my magic now!
• Courtney: It's okay. Next time, don't go running off without me. I was so worried about you.
• Tulin: So, did you find a spell that can help you guys?
• Courtney: Not yet.
• Van: courtney we can't leave. hyrule needs our help. this blizzard clearly isn't normal.
• Tulin: Yeah, we gotta do something!
• Courtney: You're right. There's gotta be a reasonable explanation behind this blizzard. I’m sensing some sort of darkness…
• Tulin: Darkness?
• Van: yeah! just like the darkness we felt at hyrule castle emanating off that mummy! there has to be some connection.
• Courtney: We just need to find the source of this blizzard. And once we find it…
• Tulin: It'll stop the blizzard and save Rito village from being frozen!
• Courtney: Precisely!
• Van: well I'm no expert but the swirling maelstrom of fridged air and clouds looks like a good place to start
• Tulin: oh right! the massive cloud! I've been trying to get dad to let me investigate it but we aren't exactly seeing eye to eye.
• Teba: (from the balcony above) tulin! its time!
• Tulin: oh shoot the scouting trip! gotta go!
• Van: wait! let us see you off at least, maybe we can make our case for investigating the cloud!
• tulin: alright, if you want to. but I doubt he will budge...he is too busy clinging to that stupid kid's song for hope...
• Courtney: *hears about a song about hope and thinks* Hmm…

Link's return

• (the two head up to the balcony to see teba)
• Van: elder teba, we have reason to believe that the source of the blizzard is that massive cloud! if we could investigate it then-
• Teba: did tulin put you up to this to try and get me to let him investigate the cloud alone? I'm sorry but the answer remains no!
• Tulin: what? come on! I wouldn't need anyone else to back me up its a stupid cloud!
• Teba: a stupid cloud that has been tormenting us since it arrived with a nightmarish winter! besides you’re not ready for a solo mission like that. you haven't even learned how to work with your flock!
• Tulin: (visibly frustrated) thats not fair at all! you know I can handle it! checking out that huge cloud wouldn't be hard! I could even do it alone!
• (teba groans in frustration, tulin is clearly not getting to the point, while van feels a bit bad for the young rito, knowing how he really is missing how important being part of a team is, only to be distracted by an approaching figure)
• Tulin: if we don't do anything...the village-(tulin notices the figure as well, as does teba, saki and courtney)
• Courtney: *gasps*
• Tulin: (to the figure) Huh? Is that you?
• Van: no way...
• (tulin flies over and the figure is revealed to be...link! now with a strange new magical arm)
• Tulin: It is you! Link! (he holds out his wings as if about to embrace link in a big feathery hug)
• Van: link! you're alive! thank the ride matrix!
• Courtney: We were so worried about you!
• Van: what’s with your arm man?
• (link explains)
• Van: so after we were separated you ended up on a sky island and gained a magic prosthetic arm from the spirit of the first king of hyrule named rauru, and now you've been searching for zelda and us this whole time?
• (link nods)
• Van: wow...thats heavy...
• Courtney: *flies right next to Van and Tulin* Meanwhile, we have a bigger fish to fry. This snow storm is getting out of hand! And Rito Village is in danger!

Tulin flies off

• Teba: Link! They told me you were missing. It’s good to see you doing well.
• Saki: It’s very nice to see you again.
• Teba: Do you remember my son, Tulin? He’s grown taller, though perhaps not yet grown up.
• Tulin: Well, maybe I would if you didn’t treat me like a hatchling all the time!
• Teba: As long as you still think you can take on the world by yourself, you’ll always be my little chick.
• Tulin: What, you think I can’t? I’m already fully-fledged, you know! You’ll change your tune when I ace today’s scouting trip! You all can keep wasting your time treating the Song of the Stormwind Ark like it’s real, but not me! *flies off*
• Teba: Listen, you-
• Courtney: Tulin, wait!

Revali and Courtney team up

• (Courtney heads over to the flight range to ask anyone for help on finding Tulin as she sees a familiar rito who is practicing his archery skills)
• Courtney: *lands on the ground as she sees the rito fixing up his Great Eagle Bow and approaches him* Master Revali?
• Revali: Hmm? *turns around to see Courtney* Well, look who has returned.
• Courtney: It’s really good to see you again, Master Revali. But, there’s no time for chit chat. You know Tulin, right?
• Revali: Yeah, he’s a good kid. Why do you ask?
• Courtney: Well, he’s missing! He flew off on his own and Van, Link and I need your help to find him!
• Revali: *groans as he rubs between his eyebrows after hearing that Tulin flew away on his own* Unbelievable… Kids these days…
• Courtney: So, can you help us?
• Revali: If Tulin means so much to you all and Teba, why not.
• Courtney: Thank you, Master Revali. I’m truly grateful. Now, come on. Let’s go! *flies off to meet back up with Van and Link*
• Revali: *follows Courtney*

Battling the scourge of the wind temple

• (from the now open chamber in the deck of the boat, a massive gust of cold wind blows everyone off! courtney lands safely on revali as he flies through, van deploys his glide armor, link his paraglider and tulin regains control with his gust technique. the team witnesses the emergence of the source of the blizzard from within the storm wind arc! the massive flying ice beast, colgera!)
• Courtney: Uh oh, that’s not good!
• Van: (in mid air van summons Onyx, ready to fight using his magic alongside him)
• Tulin: Okay, let’s go!

Epilogue: The rito brotherhood ritual/the portal to the trials

• (van and tulin stand at the top of vah medo's roost, Van eyeing the water below them as they wait for the brotherhood ritual to start)
